Troubleshooting Custom Domains

Note: DNS is heavily cached and changes could take up to 24 hours to take effect. It is recommended you wait this long after the initial set-up before troubleshooting any errors.

We’re sorry that you are having problems with your custom domain setup

1. Make sure that your Custom Domains setup is set up using these instructions.

2. The most common problems are caused by changing your Name Servers (there are two). If you are doing this, it will not work. You need to add an A record as described here.

3. If you are setting up a custom subdomain, set a CNAME record to posterous.com as described here

4. If none of this is working, please manually refresh your DNS cache (see below) and restart your computer.

5. If you still have issues accessing your Space, use the feedback form and send us the registrar where you purchased the domain, your custom domain address, Posterous Space address, and the primary email address on your Posterous account.

To manually refresh your local computer’s DNS cache:

  • In OS X Leopard, open Terminal application from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and type in “dscacheutil -flushcache” (without quotes) and hit enter.
  • On Windows, go to Start > Run > type “cmd” (without quotes) and hit enter; Then type in “ipconfig /flushdns” (without quotes) and hit enter.
