Markdown is a rich-text formatting language that allows more precise control over how text is presented on your Posterous.

You can use markdown in posts — you just have to make sure you click the HTML button in the post editor to go into raw HTML mode.

Once HTML mode is activated, you’ll be able to edit markdown in the editor easily.
